Spent 2.5 hours in a parking lot learning to drive stick today.

My left leg hurts from all the stop/go, drive in a circle, rinse and repeat. My mom's E46 330xi has a really funny clutch, engagement point is way higher up than my dad's 1991 Volvo 240 wagon.

I found the clutch in E46s to be a little different. I spent a lot of time getting better at driving stick in an 88 or 29 240 Wagon.

The 240 has been an easy car to drive in the few times I've driven it.

I hope you're going to go back tomorrow. And the next day, and the day after that.

It's certainly no walk in the park, but you'll get there.

Take it slow, and learn the basics. Don't worry about the fancy stuff until later on. Start, shift, brake, neutral stop. Until your legs can't do anymore, and then one more lap.

There simply is no better way to learn.

That's the plan, I'd love to log as many miles as possible but it's tough being in the city.

ehh once you get it down you'll be able to quickly swap cars with different pedal feels and engagement points and adapt quickly. I still find it odd to jump from my 98 Camaro with its hydraulic clutch and 6spd to my 68 with its mechanical and way heavier clutch and 4 speed. Just spending a hour or two in one then hopping to the other is odd and seems to take me a block for muscle memory to kick in

I'm kind of of the opinion that most of BMW's clutches suck; they're generally pretty numb and have high engagement points.

Congrats! Learning to drive stick takes time — it took me a year of DD to feel competent, and another 3 or so before I felt like I'd finally 'mastered' it and started racing my Miata. Once you do master it, though, it's the most relaxing way to drive; you feel so much more alive than when you're just sitting there in an automatic.

On a side note, you've got cool parents.

I learned stick in a 2003 Camry where EVERYTHING except for the clutch was worn to the bone. We wen over first and second gear in a parking lot an then I was out in LA traffic!

Alternatively, riding a motorcycle also improves clutching skillz.
